The Vespa story begins in 1946, in the Italian town of Pontedera. At that time, Italy was devastated by World War II and the transportation industry was in ruins. Entrepreneur Enrico Piaggio, owner of the Piaggio company, was looking for an inexpensive and simple vehicle that could help rebuild the country.

To this end, Piaggio commissioned aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio to design a new vehicle. D’Ascanio, inspired by fighter planes, created a lightweight, compact vehicle with a two-stroke engine and a tubular chassis. The design was revolutionary for the time, and represented a break with traditional motorcycle models.

The new motorcycle was christened Vespa, which in Italian means “wasp”. Vespa was an immediate success, and quickly became a symbol of post-war Italy. The vehicle was affordable, easy to ride and reliable, making it ideal for urban transport.
